In Your Bag

PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT

The following is a list of recommended equipment. To make the best of the learning and shooting opportunities of our retreat, we encourage you to have most of the following items:

TRIPOD

A sturdy, stable tripod is preferable. We recommend tripods with strong, solid legs. Remember to have your quick release plate with you (this attaches to the base of your DSLR and then clips your camera onto the tripod head).

BATTERIES AND CHARGER

Have at least one spare fully charged battery with you at all times (two is better), and make sure to charge your batteries during down time.

MEMORY CARDS AND CARD READER

You will be taking plenty of photos, so please pack spare memory cards. You should also have a card reader if you’d like to download your images onto your laptop for viewing. A portable hard-drive is also useful to back up your images.

LENS CLEANSER, BRUSH & BLOWER

Some areas we visit will be sandy and maybe windy, so bring cleaner, brush and a rocket blower to help keep your lens and camera clean. If you find yourself changing lenses out in the open, it’s a good idea to give your sensor a blow clean at the end of the day, to remove any dust that may have ended up there.

FLASHLIGHT

Having a flashlight will help you navigate your way in low light and can also be used to help you acquire focus when shooting in dim light. Please make sure your flashlight has a fairly powerful beam.

LENSES

As a guide, we recommend the following types of lenses for this retreat:

• Wide angle: Lenses that can cover the range from 10mm – 24mm for crop frame sensors, or 14mm – 35mm for full frame sensors will be suitable. These lenses are great for landscapes.

• Medium range: Lenses that can cover 35mm – 120mm, perfect for street photography and portraits. Prime lenses in the 50mm – 85mm range are also great for street portraiture.

• Telephoto range: Lenses that cover 70-200mm are useful for portraiture and to isolate parts of the scene that are far away.

FILTERS

You might like to bring an ND filter for some long exposures of landscapes/seascapes. We recommend an ND32 or ND64.
